Overview of the Month 💯
I Turned 17 on October 27 🎉
Did you know that I can apply to become a private pilot 🧑✈️? 🤯 As I mentioned in my previous newsletter 🗞, I turned 17 last week. I had to travel to Amritsar to participate in the Chess Nationals (More about that in the next section), so there wasn’t much of a celebration 🎉 for my birthday, but I invited a few friends for dinner a day earlier 🥘. As I look 👀 back at the previous year, I am thankful for all the experiences I have had and I am looking forward to the next year of my journey 🗺.
CISCE Chess Nationals at Amritsar ♟
I participated in the Chess ♟️ Nationals to represent my State, Tamil Nadu. I placed just above 30 out of 60 people and my team (Tamil Nadu) finished ☑️ in 4th place. In all honesty, it was not my best performance 😕 but I learned a lot, ranging from new opening lines to perseverance, from this experience 💡. A key thing I found during this time is that “The game is not over until the opponent starts winning but only when you give up”🔥. I observed this in several games as well as my own.
I had an enjoyable experience🏞, made some great memories🎞, met some amazing people 🧑🤝🧑, and tried a lot of new activities (especially the street food🍜). I also visited the Golden Temple 🛕 in Amritsar at 3 am and it was a surreal experience🌅.
Joined 'The Unfiltered Scoop’ as an editor ✍️
My friend from TKS, Amrit Kaur 👩🎓 started an initiative to spread information ℹ️ about stories that are often ignored or overlooked by the mainstream media. We kickstarted our Instagram page 📄 on October 18 and the first article 📝 I edited has been posted on our Medium page as well. It has been an exciting experience of collaborating with other people in the group (researchers, editors, etc.).
Please make sure to check out the articles🗒️! ✨ 💯
First TKS Explore Hackathon 💻
I participated in my first hackathon at TKS from November 3 to November 5 😀 . I was part of an amazing team 🦸 that included Brooke Joseph👩🎓, Dong Nguyen Minh Anh👩🔬, and Claire Ma👩💻. We came up with a solution to create nanobots that detect cancer early and decrease the number of deaths 📉 due to late detection of cancer (more about the project here). I had an amazing experience working on the project and helping create the presentation. ✨💯
The lesson of the month 🌟
Bias toward action 💪
Bias toward action essentially means being willing to act upon the ideas 💭 that you come up with to see the idea move forward ⏩, instead of just having them. As a person who usually analyses every single possibility of an event 🎇 happening, I delay action and continue only thinking 💭 about the ideas. This lesson has helped me to push past this and act 🏃 on the ideas that I have (writing this issue of the newsletter 📰, getting started with my learn article 📄 for my focus 🧠 at TKS)
A key learning from this lesson is that done>perfect 🎯
AI/ML Project Stuff (My TKS Focus) ⚙️ ⚽️
I started my focus on Artificial Intelligence 🧠 at TKS. I am passionate about the application ⚙️ of Artificial intelligence in Football ⚽️ (especially in transfers ). Did you know that over €4.4 billion 💶 was spent last year on buying players? You could have bought over 13 of the world’s most expensive car (1963 Ferrari 250 GTO) 🚗 . A lot of teams in the English Premier League ⚽️ have their own specialized data science 🧬 teams for transfers (especially identifying players). However, some teams spend millions of money 💰, only for the players not able to perform 🏃♂️ up to their expectations. This is the problem I am trying to explore in my focus.
I am creating a python program to understand the transfer market better in the English Premier League ⚽️ from a purely statistical 🧮 standpoint. I will be using Pandas 🐼, Matplotlib📊, and a few other libraries to create the program & the data from fbref.com.
Make sure to subscribe to my newsletter to stay updated on the project 😁
Something interesting this month 💫
Elon Musk acquired Twitter and entered the Twitter HQ on my birthday (October 27). What a coincidence!🤯
Key learnings this month 💫
"Life is a journey, not a destination."
– Ralph Waldo Emerson
This a fairly popular quote but as I look 👀 back, something that matters along the journey 🗺 is the people 🧑🤝🧑🧑🤝🧑 you travel 🧭 along with as well.
"Accountability is the measure of a leaders height."
― Jeffrey Benjamin
Taking responsibility for your actions and stepping up ⬆️ to the occasion when needed is something I learned 💭 during this month.
Important events coming up 🔥
November 21 - My final exams start ✍️
Conclusion 🔴
Thank you for taking the time to read through the second issue of my newsletter 😃. As I mentioned in my previous issue ⏪, I have added some more sections to this issue. Well, until the next issue, see you 👋
